What is DBT?

What is DBT?

Dialectical Behavioral Therapy is a specialized treatment to help people who suffer from intolerable emotional pain that detrimentally impacts the quality of their life. It is a treatment that incorporates extensive research evidence which has been proven to reduce, and at times, stop the life threatening emotional pain and behaviors of the patient. DBT was originally developed by Dr. Marsha Linehan to help people who are diagnosed with Borderline Personality Disorder. The treatment has now expanded to relive the symptoms of emotional dysregulation and uncontrollable anger, as well as impulses and eating disorders.

How does DBT work?

DBT promotes clients’ learning of new skills to manage distressed emotions and life-threatening behaviors effectively. These new life-saving skills deliberately change their life-long emotional and behavioral patterns which previously created unrelenting crises.

These skills will be learned at a DBT Skills Training Group. This is a specially designed class where clients are taught to acquire a new set of behavioral and cognitive skills with DBT experts. This weekly group session is combined with an individual DBT session during which clients receive customized care from an assigned DBT therapist.

For adolescents, we provide Multifamily DBT groups. In these sessions, both the parents and the child learn DBT skills which allow for them to apply new behavioral and emotional patterns within their family. This is also combined with an individual session for the adolescent.

Dialectical Behavior Therapy is scientifically proven, evidence-based psychotherapy treatment. Now you can experience this advanced psychotherapy service in Korea.

In 1991, Dr. Linehan studied the effectiveness of Dialectical Behavior Therapy with other psychotherapy treatments. She used the most rigorous controlled studies and it was found that DBT was 2 times more effective in treating emotional dysregulation and self-harming behaviors.

Since then, many research studies have continually validated the effectiveness of DBT.

Clients who experience severe emotion dysregulation and have multiple, chronic problems, such as engaging in suicidal and self-harm behaviors, depression, anxiety, eating disordered behaviors, substance problems, or other difficulties related to intense emotions.

engaging in high-risk behaviors that need more frequent intervention to avoid hospitalization or residential treatment (which can be costly and do not help clients learn to cope in their real-world environment)

having time limitations (e.g., returning to school or work) or travel limitations (e.g., living a far distance from where treatment is available) that do not allow for a year or more of standard DBT treatment
