ADHD

Children and adolescents who have ADHD experience severe difficulties in learning, relationships, emotional development, etc. Numerous studies have shown that early intervention is significant to prevent children and adolescents with ADHD from developing other disorders such as to conduct disorder or antisocial personality disorder.

Adults with ADHD experience great difficulties in their work environment and with developing and maintaining their social relationships. Adults may show less severe signs of hyperactive behaviours; however, they still suffer through severe problems due to difficulties in attention, impulsivity, and regulating their emotions. Furthermore, without clear insight and knowledge about the disorder, they often blame themselves and experience low self-esteem believing that their problems are due to their cognitive and personality-related weaknesses.

Below are several symptoms of ADHD

Behavioral Therapy for ADHD

During the initial steps of treatment, the client and/or the client’s parents learn the theoretical background and symptoms of ADHD so that they can enhance their objective understanding of the disorder. Moreover, they learn how the symptoms persist due to the clients’ environment.

As the treatment progresses, the client learns behavioral and cognitive skills to replace their problematic behaviors (e.g. a child who consistently touches objects around him/her during class would be prompted to select and apply learned replacement behaviors such as bubble breathing, holding hands for a few minutes with fingers interlocked, etc.) and the client’s parents learn skills to provide effective and consistent parenting.

During the final stages of treatment, the client generalizes newly learned skills to other environment and find ways to prevent relapse of the disorder.
